Upon startup (XP) I keep getting a window opening under notepad....
"desktop.ini" and I can't seem to get rid of it, nor do I know for sure what
it is and how it suddenly appeard on my system.
How can I get rid of it? Thanks for any help or suggestions.

please make sure that you have "hide protected files" ticked and "dont show
hidden folders" is ticked, i had that once, i think that file gives details
of icons and graphical layout of the desktop, let me know if this
helps....pete ;-)

I was having the same problem so used Method 2: Use the System Configuration
Utility (Msconfig.exe) to Disable the Startup Item. Upon restarting my PC
the following box is appearing and I can't get into the utility until I
relieve it.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In the blue banner: System Configuration Utility
Message Text:
You have used the System Configuration Utility to make changes to the way
Windows starts.
The System Configuration Utility is currently in Diagnostic or Selective
Startup mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run
every time Windows starts.
Choose the Normal Startup mode on the General tab to start Windows normally
and undo the changes you made using the System Configuration Utility.
[] Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when
Windows starts.
[OK]
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Please help. What should I do? Or what did I do wrong?

You should check the "Don't show this" box.

You've done nothing wrong. The message is MS's way of letting you
know that the configuration has been changed. But instead of just
saying that, the message makes it sound like some sort of calamity.

(You can avoid the whole issue, _and_ have a better user interface,
by using Autoruns instead of MSCONGFIG, as I've suggested before.)

Thanks so much Stan. You're right. It DOES sound like a calamity!

Autoruns, eh? I must have missed that post. It doesn't run in START | RUN.
Is it a separate download? From that
everything-you-need-to-know-about-Microsoft website?

OK. Box checked.

I shall sleep soundly tonight! :)
