unwanted search engines

Guest

Whenever I type anything in my address bar, I get an unwanted search engine.
For example, at my home page, I type in www.yahoo.com in the address bar. I
am returned the following URL:http://www.nkvd.us/1507/www.yahoo.com. I am
then taken to the nkvd.us webpage, which is a search engine. It does this
with every web site that I type in. I am never taken to the desired webpage.
The only way to get to awebpage that is not saved in my favorites is to type
the site in on my homepage search bar.

Does anyone know how to remove this or work around it?

You have malware running on your PC
- search the web for spybot or adaware removal tools
(or ask for help in the Windows or IE newsgroups)

Not a FP issue

And PRAY that you have not been hijacked by Cool Web Search...it's insidious. I've been trying to kill it on one of my machines for 4 days now. nasty nasty nasty.

It has about 40+ variants some of which write hidden registry entries that mutate...I'm about to reformat if I can't kill it soon.

My dad got a browser hi-jacker 20/20 search. man, that was difficult to
remove. I wound up simply reformatting his computer.

I've tried to tell him a hundred times not to answer the "dialog boxes" even
if he _thinks_ he's hitting "no", as that button is usually rigged to the
"yes" as well as the "big" close button on the box.

trying to get him to alt-f4 the things or be sure he's hitting the system
"close" button has been challenging.

I've got him rigged up with sp2, and the msn tool bar so now most of the
potential has been eliminated. ;-)

CWS is awful...it crashes AdAware, uninstalls or blocks part of Norton AntiVirus 2005,,,its a really bad one man. I'm going blind from editing the registry a hundred times.

Hey..Happy New Year btw...I was busy :)

I finally killed CWS...what a beeatch! Musta took me 30 hours.

_restore is a pain in the butt...you gotta totally kill restore files or this thing will keep coming back.

I gotta say it's the worst hijacker I've ever had to kill.

Yah...CWS shredder will see (most of the time) it but won't remove all of it.

You have to run AdAware in Safe mode, once it finds all of the files you have to let it delete ONE at a time...then run AdAware AGAIN for each of the files....In my case I had to run Full Scan 27 times (which takes for ever)...then when you're down to just the ones in _RESTORE you have to use a boot.exe disc to deltree index.dat and then kill all the _restore files & folder (Windows ME sux btw)...and kill the hosts files it creates and protects.

If you don't kill _restore it will all leak back out again and kill Norton AV and Spybot S&D and AdAware. Nasty nasty nasty.
