Recently, my PC (Windows XPPro) has started telling me on startup that I or a
program have requested info from go.microsoft.com, and wants to know which
connection to use.

How can I stop it doing this, please? Many thnaks

Hi Blackbeard,
What is the name of the Program and do you have Windows Defender installed
on your system.
Try to scan for Malware/Viruses on your Machine if you didn't install new
application/PrograFor Anti-Virus scan online go here:

m recently and it looking for Update.

Many thanks, Nass. I will try the link you suggested when I get a moment. I
don't know which programme is trying to connect to go.microsoft.com - it does
not say. However, I have Norton Internet Security 2006 installed. Shouldn't
that catch any spyware? Do you think it may be Norton that is itself trying
to connect to go.microsoft? Is there any way of finding out which of my
programmes is set up to automatically connect? Many thanks

There is no antispyware product that works 100% - and Norton would not be
even be near the top (or on) my antispyware list...

I'm unsure what is trying to connect to go.microsoft.com.. Is it a more
specific site than that?

Thank you, Shenan. The notice simply says "You or a program have requested
info from go.microsoft.com", and wants to know which
connection to use. It is no more specific than that.

Hi Blackbeard,
You may be infected with Sasser or it's varients that is my Guess!, it
doesn't mean your AV is up2date that you will n't get infected from either
Malware/Viruses.
As Shenan said Norton is not Anti-spyware, it is Anti-Virus, Did you by any
chance install new Softwares on your machine lately or you have SP2
installed, and your OS updates are installed.
Scan for Malware and Viruses to eliminate this side, then Look for any
Processes Take the Most of your %CPU Usage and Send it here or google for it
to find out what it is and if it can be a source of threat to your machine.
Get Anti-Spyware from here:
http://www.download.com for Spybot S&D
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ for SE personal use
Hope this helps

Thanks Nass - I have been away for a few days but, now back, will try your
solution and let you know how I get on.

Hi Nass,

Yes, I have SP2 and my OS is updated. I have just run SpyBot with no luck -
I am still getting the message that I mentioned at the start of this thread,
saying that a programme or I have requested info from go.microsoft.com. Can
you or anyone else help, please? Many thanks.

Hullo Nass and Sheenan - just to let you know that this problem was solved by
deleting WgaTray.exe, as suggested by Larry Gardner on this forum. Thanks
for your help.

automatically connecting at login to validate your system.
There are many articles all over the internet on this topic about Microsoft
installing 'malware' on everyone's system at the beginning of June.

If you get a window, check your taskbar, IMMEDIATELY, and see if you have a
button for the connection window with a icon like a star.

Or check the icon on the following file: C:\Windows\System32\WgaTray.exe"
