When adding a picture to a document (Insert, Text Box, click in text box to
get smaller box, then Insert, Picture, From File) a frame line appears,
uninvited, around the picture. How can I avoid this?

Well, first of all, you don't need to insert a text box in order to insert a
picture. In Word 2000 and above, pictures are inserted In Line with Text, so
you have to change the wrapping if you want to be able to drag them around
to position them (which may be why you're using a text box), but the text
box just adds a layer of complexity *and* by default has a line border. To
change the wrapping on an inserted picture, click on it to display the
Picture toolbar, then click on the Text Wrapping button (dog icon) to
display the menu and choose any wrapping style other than In Line with Text.

If you still want to use a text box, go to Format Text Box and, on the Lines
and Colors tab, select No Line.
