When I click on a hyperlink on a page, it opens the page (word document) in a
new window as expected. When I close the page to return to the original
page, I get a username and password request.

Word 2000? It has a bug You must download and installed Office 2000 SR1 or
SR2. Anyone without the SR will have the same issues.

Are you trying to write back any changes, etc. as the document should open in read-only mode?

Not doing any write back, just opening a document.

Just tested on another workstation where I don't have frontpage installed
and I don't get the password message. The only difference is it is using W2K
but uses Wiord 2003. It's appears to happen on the computer I have frontpage
installed and do my updates from. Possibly something gone wrong or needs to
be reset on frontpage?

Seem to have found the problem. re knowledge base article 822128 FP seems to
be confused and trys to write the file back to the web site rather than to
the recent domument list locally on your computer. Therefore credentials are
requested.
