Unwanted noise

When my comp is on I have a repetitive noise that sounds like a really fast
ticking noise coming form my speakers. Even when I close all programs it is
still there and it drives me insane.

Also my CD's don't play smoothly anymore.

Could there be a program running that I don't know about?

Suggestions please.

When I invoke the Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del) at this moment, it mentions
four applications, yet 68 processes. Quite a few "programs running that I
don't know about"!

You can use the Task Manager to find out which processes use the most
CPU-time, and *may* be able to conclude what causes the noise (possibly
radio interference by a hard disk) and perhaps even prevents your CDs from
playing smoothly (which I take for a secondary symptom).

But it seems rather far away from the topic of this newsgroup...
