On the log in screen, below my name is the message "you
have two unread messages". I cannot find any unread
message in either Outlook Express (which I use) or
Outlook 97 (which I don't use). I recently changed my
email account from MSN to Virgin because of excessive
spam. There may have been a couple of messages there
before I deleted the account. I cannot get back to the
account because I do not know what the server types are
for incoming or outgoing mail. Is there a way that email
can become "hidden" in this circumstance and how can I
get rid of this unwanted message???

Go to Start and type "regedit" without the quotes in the run box and press
enter. Go to the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail
Click the plus sign, go to the e-mail account with which you've had this
issue. Look for message count in the right pane. You'll see an entry as
follows, 0x00000000 followed by a number in parenthesis as in (98), change
the number in parenthesis to zero or whatever the count should be.

Check on 10/16/03 for a message with subject:

Re: Number of Unread E-mails beside user name on XP-Home.

Kelly and others graciously provides this info on a regular basis.
