I used a HP Deskjet 1220c and print half tones on transparancies. I
dont frequently use photos but when I do they cause me a hell of a
time. Id REALLY appreciate some assistance. Areas that appear solid
black or with very subtle haltones come out blotchy and with an
unwanted line type pattern. I have done the clean and prime options for
my cartridge and it still happens. I also use the printer settings for
darkest print with maximum ink volume because I need a thick ink
deposit for the applications I use them for. If I print just a flat
black box or something without halftones it works fine. I am at a
complete loss with what to do. Here are pictures of my failed print.

seems like im unable to link pics of the problem...guess youll have to
cut and paste. THANKS in advance for the help.

Is this cartridge refilled with after market inks?

Im starting to think its the cartridge. Is this something that occurs
with a new cartridge Im just not familiar with?

If you mean these lines www.inkline.gr/temp/printprob3.jpg is either the ink
cartridge (try a nozzle check) or the forwarding mechanism doesn't feed the
transparencies correctly (there is an overlay between printing passages).
If you mean the other white lines, it's obvious, the cause should be the
transparencies. Most possible, they are scrached before you print.

Ok, I switched it with another cartridge and it works ok. What could be
wrong with this other NEW cartridge? What can I do to repair it?

Return it as defective and exchange it for a new cart. Contrary to the view
of a few participants on this NG, an OEM cart can also fail!

there are some occassions where the integrated printhead may be
defective.. HP will stand behind it.

hp will replace it. it was probably a bad integrated printhead.

That pattern of missing nozzles is typically caused by an interconnect
problem. Try cleaning the cartridge pads as shown at:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=bpa02060

Also check the cartridge warranty as shown at:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?lc=en&cc=us&docname=bua02014.
If the cartridge is still in its two year warranty period and cleaning
the contacts does not help then contact HP or our dealer for a warranty
replacement.

It is possible it is a defective cartridge, or bad or dirty connections
where the cartriodge interfaces with the printer... but if so, it would
show up in other applications.

I have seen this problem even with laser printers, and it just has to do
with the driver's ability (or inability) to translate a bitmap image
into a printer rasterized one correctly. I suspect there are some size
generation problems which leave odd extra information behind.

Look on the HP website to see if the driver you are using has been updated.

One or more ink nozzles could be clogged or the resistors could be bad,
or the electrical spots where the printer is attached and give the
commands to the cartridge and head could be defective (or just dirty) as
well.

If it is a OEM cartridge, HP will probably replace it at no cost to you.

Actually, an interconnect issue on the black cartridge would show up in
graphics using transparency mode but typically would not show up if just
printing text or plain paper graphics. There is enough overlap of the
drops in text mode that even repeating missing lines of nozzles would
not generally be detected. When printing graphics on plain paper or
photo settings the color cartridge is used more even for B&W graphics
and the problem would not show up there either. [Actually, on photo
paper the pigmented black ink is not used at all.]
