in windows xp there is functionality called internet connection firewall to
help eliminate unwanted intrusions.

Is there anything similar in Windows 2000?

Not really. Some will say ipsec filtering can be used to create a firewall which
is true if a user is familiar with creating firewall rules and understands the
limitations of using ipsec filtering for an internet firewall including it's
default traffic exemptions. However I prefer using a personal firewall on a home
type computer. Zone Alarm, Sygate, and Kerio are all free for personal use. Zone
Alarm is easiest for beginners, but not as configurable and featured as the
other two. I personally would suggest a SPI hardware device if using a cable/dsl
modem. They are easy to configure and reliable. A misconfigured/malfunctioning
firewall can be as bad as no firewall. --- Steve
