Unwanted Highlighting

W. Guy Delaney

I am running Microsoft Word XP, which is fully patched and updated.

There are times when test becomes highlighted for no reason that I can
figure out. Wherever I move my cursor, the text from the old cursor position
to the new cursor position become highlighted. Understand that I am no
holding down any keys or any mouse button. The highlighted text just simply
follows the cursor.

In order to correct this problem, I have to reboot my computer.

Any solutions?

When this happens, is the EXT item on the status bar active? This is the
Extend Selection feature, and it behaves as you describe. It can be turned
on by double-clicking the EXT or by pressing F8. If that's the problem, then
simply press the Escape key to turn it (Extend Selection) off.

If not that, then perhaps one of the Shift keys is sticking, either due to a
mechanical problem or due to a software conflict.

Yes, that was apparently my problem. Thanks.
