unwanted desktop icons

From Windows Explorer I created a shortcut icon
for 'Windows Update' and dragged it on to my desktop.
Now I cannot delete it, send it to recycle bin, move it,
or access it in any way without receiving an error
message which blocks all actions. Investigation shows
that this is described as "not a valid shortcut".

How can I delete/move the wretched thing? And what went
wrong in the first place? All I did was right-click
on 'create shortcut'.

Any solutions most welcome.

If all else fails, go to System Restore and restore from
a date just before you did what you did.

Just an idea, drag the icon back to Explorer. Re-boot and try deleting it
from there. I don't know that it will work but, it won't hurt to try.

LOL, JAX

Suggestion:

Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace
