Hi,
My system, XP Home Edition, on a dial up connection, has
started to try to connect to the internet every time I
boot up. I guess a newly added program has put in an
option to automatically check for upgrades. This only
started after I installed McAfee virus scan, Sygate
firewall and Lavasoft's Ad aware. Any ideas on where I
find the option that will
allow me to identify which programme is causing this.
Currently I have turned off the option to connect
automatically so that I can control when to connect.
Thanks for your help.

In internet explorer, click tools > internet options and
check the connections tab. make sure it's never dialling
a connection.

Have a look under the startup tab in msconfig

This will show you what is starting up automatically.

Some of the items you mention may be checking for updates, but that is
normally configurable within the individual application. Perhaps there's
check at boot option in one/more of them.

Trial versions of software may also connect at boot time, as may certain
viruses and spyware.
They do still slip through even with virus checkers.
