Unwanted 3 column default setting

Hi,
Every time I open a blank document in Word, it is formatted with 3 columns.
I can get one column for that particular document, but the next time I open
a blank document, it still comes up with 3 columns. I can't get rid of this
default 3 column setting. What can I do about it?

Hi....

Have you tired modifying the template itself, rather than
a document based upon the template?

Thank you, Don, for your reply. I'm afraid I don't know how to modify the
template correctly. I tried clicking "modify." I went to Word's Help, but I
haven't solved the problem, yet.
