I get twoboxes coming up automatically most times I switch on the computer.
I can't close them, though they can be minimised. I don't want them to
appear at all.

ONe is windows Live Mesenger, inviting me to do something or other. I
haven't done anything and don't want to use the service at the moment.

The other is telling me a drive needs installing for memory sticks and they
won't work without my doing so. They work perfectly. If I tick the install
box it tells me there's an error and it can't do it. If I tick the don't
show me this message again box, it continues to appear.

live messenger is probably starting
up with the desktop and it then asks
you to log in.

to disable the live messenger press
the Win key + R

then type and run msconfig.

go to startup tab and uncheck the
line that refers to live messenger.

then apply and reboot.

Why not tell him to go into Messenger Options and remove the checks from all
the auto startup items - the way it should be done. It is always the
preferred way to prevent something from starting up with Windows. Has been
since the inception of Windows.

well, you just did. (<s>)
