I needed to reinstall my xp pro, but couldn't find my disk, so I borrowed
another one to install it temporarily until I could locate my own. Well as it
turned out, my copy was stolen and now 30 days have passed and I'm locked
out, unable to get past the WGA. No big deal really, I had been looking for a
reason to buy a new pc anyway, so I went out and purchased a new HP with
Vista. I brought it home and installed the old hard drive into it so I could
copy my files. I disabled simple file sharing and took ownership of the
drive, but it still will not let me access it. Is WGA still the problem here?
If so, what the heck do I do now?

put the hdd back to where it belonged

try one or more options below
- boot to bios and set the clock one month backword,
and hope you could boot up the old xp
- boot to a Knoppix bootable CD and
try to access the hdd
- boot to an UBCD4Win bootable CD and
try to access the hdd

I get the dreaded "access is denied" message...

No, this has nothing to do with WGA. Exactly what error message to you
get when you try to access the slaved hard drive?

I don't believe I mentioned anything about permissions; however, I have
checked the permission page for the only account on the machine (mine) and it
has full permissions. As far as logging into another account after changing
permissions, there is only one account on this machine, and it is an
administrator account.

I did...and after gathering info from a large number of sites, I settled on
the MS procedure outlined in the article "How to take ownership of a file or
folder in Windows XP". I followed the steps outlined and was able to take
ownership; however, I am still getting the "access is denied" message.

Sorry I forgot to mention another detail. This may or may not be important...
The new HD is SATA and the old is IDE. Although I have a converter for IDE
to SATA, for ease I chose to plug the old HD into the one IDE slot on the
board and left the jumper in the "cable select" position.
Probably not relevent to this particular event, but felt it worth mentioning.

Okay, don't check permissions on the files on which you took ownership.
Don't check of the OWNER or Administrators account have Full permissions on
those files. Your choice. Enjoy your dilemma.

I'm sorry, but I don't know what that means...maybe I'm an idiot, but I'm not
sure we're on the same page here. Could you elaborate please?

Before doing stupid things like removing the HD and putting in the new
PC, you should have asked me.

I suggest put everything back as it was and then reboot your system with
either BartPE, Acronis Recovery CD or Norton Ghost CD and you should be
able to copy all your files from the old HD to USB flash drive or CD/DVD.

BartPE can be downloaded from here:

http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/#download

You do need to build the CD and burn it to make this work. For that you
need your friend's XP CD again and then you can return it once done.

There are cracks to make things work but I won't discuss here because
you may be highly moral and very religious. I AM NOT AT ALL!!

I figured it out....had to boot into safe mode to gain access. Thanks for
everyone's help!
