Bonnie

i am in the middle of cleaning out my music files.
i have a lot of duplicates. i highlight all the songs
in the folder and then one by one i dehightlight the
songs i want.
the problem that i am having is the a lot of the time
there is a blink, a blackout or something just for a
second. when it happens the folder refreshes and
i am back to the beginning. what i have selected
is now unselected. i have to keep starting over.
this is driving me mad.
is there a fix for something like this.
i've had this problem for a long long time.
it happens no matter what folder i am working on.
hope i've made this clear.
thanks,
bonnie

You might try this:

On the Kelly's Corner website...
<http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm>
Go to line 157, left column
"Prevent Automatic Folder and Icon Refresh"

HTH,
John

thanks chas for this link.
i think i already has this and it didn't
work that great for me. i might have
not understood how to use it also.
thanks,

Hi Bonnie,

You did not mention what you are doing after you complete the selection
process, Deleting? or Moving?

How about if you change folder View to List, so you have several columns,
and then click on the file at the top of only one column, then hold shift
and click on the file at the bottom to only select the files in that column,
and then Ctrl+Click to deselect some? (Less frustration if it refreshes. :)

Are you connected to the internet when that happens? Before I start to do
anything in a folder, I like to press F5 key to refresh the folder first.
(That might buy you some time. :)

X-Newsreader: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2900.3138

According to your message header OE version, your computer is not fully
patched at Windows Update. You should be up to version 6.00.2900.5843.
Have you had problems installing Service Pack 3? (Need help with that?)

FYI: Usenet newsgroups are plain text groups. Your Outlook Express is using
"Quoted Printable" format with HTML for messages. That causes problems with
some newsreaders. I had to manually add the ">" quote indentations.
- - -
Proper Outlook Express settings for newsgroups:
Click Tools, click Options, click Send (tab)
Under News Sending Format, select Plain Text
To the right of that, click Plain Text Settings (button)
Under Message format, click Uuencode
Click OK, click OK.

(Triple click here, to be of good cheer. :)

i tried the d/l you directed me to.
i thought it worked but today the folder

thanks,
bonnie

that didn't work either.

It's possible that your mouse is faulty and therefore it un-highlights
everything that was highlighted.
For instance, highlight a few of them and then left or right click on a
blank spot in that folder. Doesn't everything you highlighted become
un-highlighted.
Just a thought.

Hi again Bonnie,

The good news is that you were successful in changing
your Outlook Express settings to work better in
newsgroups, so you can cheer up a little! :)

One other thing:
On the Outlook Express menu bar, click Tools, click
Options. Click Send (tab). Checkmark "Include message in
reply". Click OK.

It is best, when seeking help, to quote previous messages
in your reply so the would be helpers can see the
original problem description, the suggestions, things
tried already, etc., all in one message. That saves you
the work of answering the same question more than once.
(Let the helpers worry about deciding when the bulk of
information needs snipping. :)

You can go ahead and click "Reply Group" and continue
reading this message quoted in your reply, so you can add
answers to the questions below as you read.

Also, when your view of the desktop is blocked by open
windows, you can right-click the clock on the taskbar,
and click "Show the Desktop", and later, you can
right-click the clock again and click "Show Open
Windows" to hide the desktop again.
i tried the link john told me about on line 157 but
that didn't work either.

I didn't think the "line 157" fix from Kelly's website
would work in your case, since she apparently designed
that fix for a NetCrawling problem. As long as you are
not physically connected to the internet while you are
working on files, your folder refresh problem is caused
by something else.

I still don't have any for sure information about how to
keep your music folder from refreshing at the wrong time.
I am assuming that your files are in the standard
(default) "My Music" folder. If elsewhere, say so.
__

Your Mission, if you decide to accept it...

Hold your Windows Logo key and press E key for Windows
Explorer. In the Folders tree on the left, click My
Documents. In the right pane, look for "My Music",
right-click that and click Open. Your My Music folder
should open. If the Explorer window is still open, you
can close that. Now look at the upper left corner of the
My Music folder. There should be an icon that looks like
a folder with a musical note on it. Right click that
upper left icon, and click Properties. In your reply,
complete these 3 lines:

A. Size:__
B. Size on disk:__
C. Contains:__

Close that dialog.

Next, on your music folder menu bar, click Tools, click
Options. Hold CTRL key and press TAB key, to switch to
the "View" tab. In the "Advanced settings" area, the
first item is "Automatically search for network folders
and printers". If your computer is NOT connected to other
computers in an office or home network, UN-check that
item. (You can right click on any of those items and
click "What's This?" for description.)

Next, scroll further down to the "Remember each folder's
view settings" item, which should have a checkmark.
("Make it so." :)

Click OK to save any changes and close that dialog.

Back on your music folder menu bar, click View - notice
which item has a dot in front of it - and click Details.
In details view, there are several column headers. The
Name column probably has a little up pointing triangle.
Click the "Type" column header, and the triangle should
appear there. Scroll down and make a list of the
different Types of music files, and include here in your
reply. (Skip folders or non-music types.)

File Types here:__

Click "View" again to see if there is a checkmark before
"Status Bar", and if not, click it. Scroll back to the
top of your music files, and click on the top music file.
Position your mouse about 10 items below that and while
holding SHIFT key, click there. Look at the Status Bar,
bottom left: it should tell you how many items are
selected. Look at the selected items. If there are any of
those you want to keep, hold CTRL key and mouse click
each one to deselect. If you do not want to keep any of
the selected items, press DELETE key. That is what I
meant in my message for you to do, instead of selecting
all the files at once.

(Sorry for not providing better Details. :)

Since you are apparently deleting the files to Recycle
Bin, and since music files tend to be rather large,
Recycle Bin may be overloaded. When it reaches maximum
capacity, it starts dumping the oldest files first, to
make room for newly deleted files.

Right-click the Recycle Bin icon on your desktop, and
click Properties. What percentage is the slider setting?
(Do not change it yet.)
A1__

Close that Properties dialog.

(Assuming your music files are on your C drive:)
Double-click My Computer on your desktop, and right-click
the (C:) item, and click Properties:

What is the File System?
A2__

What is the Used Space?
A3__

What is the Free Space?
A4__

What is the Capacity?
A5__

Close that dialog. Close My Computer folder. Right click
My Computer on your desktop, and click Properties. On
that page under System, it should say "Microsoft Windows
XP", followed by the Edition, Version, and Service Pack
level. What do those say?
A6__

Still in that dialog, at the top, click System Restore
tab. There should NOT be a checkmark before "Turn off
System Restore." (Do not change anything yet.) If there
is a checkmark, say so. Look at the "Disk space to use"
slider: What is the percent and size in the parenthesis?
__
A7__

Still in that dialog, at the top, click Automatic Updates
tab. There should be a dot in one of the round radio
buttons. Which one is selected?
A8__

If "Automatic" is selected, what do the day and time
boxes say?
A9__

How do you connect to the Internet?
(Phone dialup? DSL? Cable? Other?)
A10__

We know that you are using Internet Explorer version 6,
which is fine. Do you use any 3rd party toolbars like
Google toolbar or Yahoo toolbar?
A11__

Desktop or Laptop Computer? (Make/model)
A12__

Are you too superstitious to answer a 13th question?
(Gotcha! :)
A13__

What current anti-virus and other anti-malware programs
do you use?
A14__

What program do you use to listen to music?
(Windows Media Player?)
A15__

That should be enough "homework" for now. The information
you provide above should help to get a better picture of
your computer configuration, and hopefully identify any
potential problems. I would advise against trying any
more registry tweaks for now. Some Registry changes can
be risky.

(Thanks in advance for your patience. :)
