For the past 2 weeks or so, my system (Win XP Home) has
been performing odd. I'm getting a lot of error messages,
Internet Explorer freezes constantly for me, checking
mail in Outlook and downloading newsgroups is unusually
time consuming for having a cable modem, and some other
odd issues have been popping up. I de-fragged about a
week prior to the New Year and none of this had been
happening before. I've run numerous virus scans with AVG
6.0, but nothing is popping up. However, a few times a
day I will get an error message saying that a virus has
been found and to run AVG, which isn't detecting it. I
checked and my virus definitions are current and up to
date, so I havn't a clue as to what's wrong. ANY help
would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

first of all goto this page
http://housecall.trendmicro.com
and take the online virus scan.
secound get a spyware remover program e.g
Ad-aware 6.0 its free and it works.
Check all the background tasks that are running by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete
got to processes and under user name close all the processes that have your name next to them.(except for explorer.exe)
