When looking for computers on the network under my Network Places, a generic
icon is displayed and named Unspecified. I click view workgroup computers and
can see them. In Windows XP pro, I can see all computers on network that are
in different domains. What am I missing?

Thanks for your help,
Gary

Hello

I had the same problem with this icon.
I solved this by deleting the following registry key:

HKLM\software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\NetworkNeighborhood\NameSpace\{3c5c43a3-9ce9-4a9b-9699-2ac0cf6cc4bf}

I too have had this problem, and am grateful that you posted a fix.
However, could you possibly share with us how you figured out which key
to delete? Or tell us where we might go to learn how to figure this
out for ourselves?

I see all of these fixes that say "Just go delete this weird registry
key", and I can't for the life of me figure out how someone figures
these things out.

Hi

One possibility is to observe registry changes. For example you can use
tools like RegSnap (or RegMon) to make snapshots of the whole registry and
compare them.

You can delete the Unspecified Icon manually in the explorer window. If you
compare the registry before and after the deletion, you will see that this
registry key is removed.
