I am plagued with unsolicited download dialog boxes. These dialog boxes
offer to download an application I have not requested.

It isn't like browser popups, so my Stopzilla does not block them.

How do I stop this?

You've probably visited a website that's put a dialer on your machine. Get
Spybot and Adaware (they complement each other and pick up things the other
misses!) and run those.

Open Internet Options advanced tab and set permissions for
some operations, such as install on demand.
Also on the security tab, advanced, set activeX controls to
disable, etc. Do this with care because you may not be able
to get into Windows update.
You can put microsoft.com in a trusted site and surf in
restricted.

Lots to do... so little time.

.Go to My Computer, click on properties, click the
automatic downloads and take the dot out of "Automatcally
keep MY computer Up-To-Date."
