unsigned driver does not install

After inserting my new Peabird PCI 56kbps V92 modem card (a modem of the CONEXANT family) in one of my two PCI slots and rebooting WXP, I forgot to use the manufacturer supplied CD and let WXP to detect and install it automatically.
WXP thought it had a Best Data Data Fax Modem and installed the corresponding driver.
Surely enough it did not work. So in the quest to get it to work I tried the following procedures:

Procedure #1
----------------
1) in Device Manager I launched the driver update and provided the directory where to search for the correct driver
2) WXP responded that the best driver was already installed and refused to oblige

Procedure #2
---------------
1) in Device Manager I removed the device and rebooted
2) once up, WXP detected the hardware and installed the previous driver without asking anything

Procedure #3
----------------
1) from MODEMS I clicked on ADD and asked to install the modem and supplied the driver's directory
2) it let me choose the proper .INF file but when it came back, the window that was supposed to list the name of my
modem was empty so I could not install it

Procedure #4
----------------
1) I disabled the device from DEVICE MANAGER + switch off the computer + changed PCI slot + rebooted
2) once up WXP installed the driver of its choice without asking

I am wasting way too much time with this issue and the manufacturer is not much help.
There must be a sort of device database in WXP where historic information are stored may be in the Registry.
I want to know how to delete those info so to go back to a clean status, insert my manufacturer provided CD
and install the proper driver.

Your advice on how to get this issue sorted out is very much appreciated.

Thanks,

Larry

Try this, Go to the Phone and Modem Options > Modems Tab > Add button >
Add Hardware Wizard > check > don't select button > check > have disk
button > browse > copy location of the file you want to be installed. Jym

Woops . In phone and Modem Options use the remove button after you highlight
the modem then continue with steps. Jym

Jym, that's what I called Procedure #3 : I pass the directory where my driver is. The installer highlights the proper .INF file.
I click OK and it should display the name of the device that it found in the .INF, right? Well, it doesn't. It displays nothing,
absoloutely nothing. There is nothing wrong with the driver kit except that is not digitally signed.
