unrepairable disk error message

I have two identical Compaq's. I suspected hardware
failure in one due to random lockups but wanted to try the
upgrade first. I wanted to upgrade OS from 98 to 2000Pro
but could not with the stopages. I swapped hard drives
with the good pc and upgraded ok but when I replaced the
HD the system would not boot and I get an "unrepairable
disk error" message or a "work stoppage" when trying to re-
run setup.
From what I have read I think MS protects their products
from images and such like what I had attempted to do here
and perhaps they have "locked" the upgrade process. I was
able to reinstall win98 two times but could not upgrade
to W2K on the machine even with original HD replaced.
With all the HD formatting it appears that the lockups
have stopped but I still am unable to upgrade. Where could
I find this lock and how can I clear it if there is such a
thing?
Any help please.....

IMO it's simply not worth the trouble, given that you'll more than likely
end up with an unstable OS with all the remnants/ corruption left behind
from the upgrade. Best to blow it all away and go for the clean install.

To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 CD-Rom or setup disks.
The set of four install disks can be created from your Win2k CD-rom; change
to the \bootdisk directory on the cd-rom and execute makeboot.exe (from dos)
or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

During Windows 2000 setup, at some point, will want to confirm the previous
operating system for the upgrade; at that point you'll simply insert the
qualified product install CD for it to verify. Then the install will
proceed.

Check the pc, mb or hardware manufacturer's web site for the latest bios and
or Windows 2000 drivers for your devices.

Thanks for the advice. Yes I have tried a simple upgrade
and it was a mess. The clean install is where I'm heading
but had these problems using both CD and Floppy disk
install options. The other PC installed W2K flawlessly and
gained about a 20% performance by simply swithching the OS.

The reboot during installation must be the secret to this
procedure as I have seen this solution posted numerous
times for a variey of setup problems.
I'll certainly give it a try.

Thanks for the quick response
