Unrecognized database format

I am trying to open an Access DB that was left by a work
colleague who has since left. I get the
message "Unrecognized database format" Does this mean
this has some sort of encryption or maybe its damaged.
What can i do to gain entry to the DB?

What version are you running? While this could mean the file is corrupted, a
very common reason for this message is attempting to open an Access file that is
a newer version than what you have installed.
