I have Access 97 and when I try to open a file, it
says "unrecognized database file" and it's an mdb file.
I thought I read somewhere that it is because I have
Access 97, but XP OS. I also have Office XP. Is there
anything I can do to access my Access files again?

Access 97 can only open mdb files that were created in 97 or earlier.
You'll ge this message if you are trying to open a XP version mdb file.

Try opening the mdb in XP.

I'm running Access97 under XP OS with no problems.

The usual two reasons for this message are:

- The database was created in, or upgraded to, Access2000 or a later
version. Access97 cannot read A2000/2002/2003 format databases. All of
these versions have an option (Tools... Convert) to save databases in
A97 format (of course features that don't exist in 97 will be lost).

- The database has become corrupted and will need to be repaired or
restored from backup. If you're VERY lucky, you may be able to use
JETCOMP.EXE (which should be in your Windows\System folder, or if not
can be downloaded from support.microsoft.com) to repair it; if it's
worth some money and you have no backup, Peter Miller at
http://www.pksolutions.com has a highly recommended database salvage
service.
