For some reason, in the middle of a game of UNREAL 2004, my system just goes
black and then begins rebooting?

Anyone else had this problem?

MY SYS:
DELL 8250
PENTIUM 4 2.6 GHZ
1.0 GIG PC1066 RAM
RADEON 9800 PRO
PCI SLOT COOLER

Greets,

9800 Pro Here, AMD64 3200 etc.

I have recently experienced screen going to black and game crashing
with some of the new resource hungry games... ie Unreal 2004,
Battlefield Vietnam, Far Cry...etc.

I was using Chaintech Via Envy Onboard sound with max HW sound
settings... for example in Unreal 2004... HW+EAX3D. The Hardware
acceleration seems to be the problem.

Changing sound to Audigy 2 helped. Changing sound setting in game
to no HW acceleration resolved the problem. If you are using onboard
sound, it has been my finding that a lot of games dont like onboard
sound. You might want to consider an Audigy 2 or Audigy 2 ZS... ZS is
probably a much better choice... about $15 more.

You might want to check sound settings in Unreal 2004 and set them
to direct 3D.

If this doesnt work try:

Run -> dxdiag
Click Sound Tab
Reduce slider bar one notch, click save.

I believe the Dell 8250 has Soundblaster. You might want to go
to the Creative Site and install the latest drivers, of course
you want to go to the ATI site and install the latest ATI drivers,
today that would be ATI 4.3

Presumably in PCI slot #1, next to the 9800 ? Do you have sufficient
front cover ventilation ? What goes out must come in from somewhere
If the problem occurs some minutes into the game, it is time to check
your power-supply.

Real the label on the power-supply. If less than 13 amps is available
on +12Volts, then dump the supply. If no information label on
power-supply, then dump it.

A reboot of this nature is almost always CPU related. It's either
overheating or not getting adequate power (or both). If you're overclocking,
slow it down a bit.

Reinstalled UT2004--seems to be working now.

You might want to get motherboard monitor or hardware doctor to make sure
your power levels aren't dropping to the point they cause these kinds of
reboots.

An audigy II indeed will better handle 3d HW audio :-)... an Audigy II
ZS is not needed, since the only real difference between the Audigy II
and the Audigy II ZS is that the ZS can do 7.1 instead of 6.1 of the
Audigy II.

Unless you actually have 7.1 box set you won't find a use for the ZS
above the normal Audigy II.
