When XP boots up, it'll show us X number of unread mails under our login
names, may i know which unread mails it is refering to? I checked all my
hotmails and POP mail accounts but the figure is still on the rise. It must
be linked to one of my email accounts but I dunno which one, I would
appreciate if someone can help. Thanx.

Hi

Download TweakUI from
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx and
when installed go to Programs>Powertoys for Windows XP>Tweak UI - then go
to Logon>Unread Mail - disable it in the right hand pane.

Otherwise the Unread Mail message can be disabled via the Registry -
navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail\[Youremailaddress]
- double click on 'MessageCount' - in the right hand pane - and change
the value to 0(Zero).

I am not sure if Will Deny's advise will help but if you do a System Restore
you will clean the mess.

Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-System Restore
Restore to a state 3 days before the problem started.

Hi Denny,

I followed the instructions and went into the registry. I realised I have 4
email address under unread mails. Is there anyway I can select the account
that I like to display the unread mails?

PS : Panda_man, thanx for your advice as well, but I would like to maintain
the unread mail display function, juz that now it doesnt reflect the status
of the email account that I prefer =)

In many cases, people will open a Hotmail account just so they can use
Windows Messenger or MSN Messenger. Because they have a POP3 account that
they use by default, they never go into their Hotmail account. Meanwhile the
Hotmail account is constantly drawing all sorts of email (usually spam).

A lot of people also set up multiple e-mail accounts to use when they
absolutely "must" give an e-mail address when visiting a web site. These are
bulls**t accounts, yet they draw spam. That is why you use them.

You have to go into each account and clean them out periodically. I do this
at least once a week, even though I never use the accounts for email
purposes.

You can also use something like Mailwasher. Set up each account to check the
email. You can set it so all of the mail from one account (unused?) is
deleted automatically from the mail server when you process the e-mail using
Mailwasher. You would use the "My Filters" option and set it up so that if
the e-mail is not addressed to your valid and chosen e-mail account, they
will automatically be flagged for deletion. Then when you press the "Process
E-Mail" button within Mailwasher, the crap will be deleted. It will never
even make it to your computer.

My three "junk" accounts (used for bulls**t reasons), which I never use for
e-mail, are constantly cleaned this way.

Hi,

A few weeks back one of the MVP's said that only 1 in 20 people responded
when they (MVP) provided a solution and wondered why they bother to post
here. Well. I'm here to tell you that I learn a LOT from reading these
posts. And I appreciate all the posts from everyone.

Now then. Do I understand that it is possible for me to set up a mail
account right on my PC that will somehow poll my bs accounts such as MSN or
Yahoo? I don't log into them very often and when I finally do they're full,
full, full.

I looked at Mailwasher. It looks as if it is a souped up verison of Message
Rules in Outlook Express. Is that right?

Is the issue that I have to go to MSN, Yahoo, etc. and forward that email to
my POP account?

Thank you in advance.

There is one huge difference between Mailwasher and the message rules in
Outlook Express. When you check the mail in Outlook Express the mail is
actually downloaded onto your computer. Then it is deleted off of the mail
server of your ISP. Now you must open it to get an idea of what it is about.
You then delete it if you want to.

With Mailwasher, only the headers and the first few lines are downloaded.
Using the included rules and heuristics, the mail is tabbed as friendly or
bulls**t, and treated accordingly when you press the "Process Mail" button.
Only the mail you want is actually downloaded to your computer.

This is a boon for people who are still stuck with a dial-up internet
access. You get the mail you want a lot faster because the crap is not even
downloaded from your ISP's mail server to your computer.

Hi Richard,

I understand what you meant but is there anyway I can make XP show only the
status of the email account of my choice? The 4 email accounts I found in the
registry are accounts that I check regularly, in fact, all of them dun have
anymore unread mails in them. I found out that the culprit is actually my
gmail account.

Is there anyway I can set preferences in XP, so that it reflects the unread
mail status only for the account of my choice?

Thank you ver much =)
