Unread Mail Problem

I have "unread Mail Messeges" in the Unread mail folder that do not exist when I click on them I cant remove them because I get the following error message "the item could not be deleted because it was already deleted ...." Does anyone know how to fix this glitch?
 
Not sure what "unread mail folder" is - but can you delete the items if you
highlight/select them and press SHIFT + DEL on your keyboard?
 
Close Outlook.
Try Start/Run exchng32.exe and see if you can delete it
with that.

I am a first time visitor to these user groups - hope this is the right place to post question. My Outlook randomly replies to emails as they are loading in my inbox, causing senders to reply back asking why no message, etc. Has anyone else had this problem?
 
In outlook 2003 in the Mail sidebar, (looks like an windows explorer tree) entitled Favorite Folders: I have the following Inbox, Unread Mail, For Follow Up, Sent Items --this task pane is new to 2003. Beside each folder, which is highlighted when there are unopened items, is a # total of unopened items. My UNopened Items contains 17 items that have been deleted but still remain in that folder. This copy is a standalone version-- not connected to an exchange server so the pst is local.

And no I can not delete them by using [shift][del]

I do not have exchng32.exe on my local PC-- this is stand alone outlook 2003
