i want to upgrade my system to windows 2000 so i can use
my new ipod......what i dont want, are a lot of
complications in the process. i had heard about all the
difficulties when a friend upgraded to me from 98.....does
anyone have any suggestions for me? also, will i lose my
current data on my hard drive on an upgrade of the os? any
horror stories, or things i should avoid....someone please
tell me i can do this smoothly....
thanks

normally those computers that require upgrade are old or
legacy system, so the very first thing is to check whether
your hardwares are supported by win 2k pro (supposed you
need a pro version) and availability of new driver for win
2k ( modem, display card, mother board...)
then check your available resources, like handdisk space
available..
also check the application your are using now, will it run
on win 2k ??

I suggest after checking HCL ( hardwares compatiable list)
and resources, make the system dual boot with win 2k

so you have the option of using win 98 and win 2k

IMO it's simply not worth the trouble, given that you'll more than likely
end up with an unstable OS with all the remnants/ corruption left behind
from the upgrade. Best to blow it all away and go for the clean install.

To do a clean install, either boot the CD-Rom or boot the Windows 2000 setup
disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Win2k CD-rom;
change to the \bootdisk directory on the cd-rom and execute makeboot.exe
(from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

During Windows 2000 setup, at some point, will want to confirm the previous
operating system for the upgrade; at that point you'll simply insert the
qualified product install CD for it to verify. Then the install will
proceed.

angi,
i agree with dave on this. IMFO - upgrades are rarely
worth it if you have a choice. better off to backup any
critical data, e-mail that you need, etc and do a clean
install. If you must upgrade, check the HCL, make sure
all your programs are supported by 2000, and backup your
mail and your documents and settings folder at a min.
good luck ( I hate running OS upgrades)
