Brian

Environment: Office XP and Windows XP Pro.
On the Welcome screen for my userid it says that I have 173 unopened
e-mails. How do I turn this off?

Click start---run---type in regedit--click OK. Go to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERS\Software\Microsoft\Windows|Current version\unread mail
double click the value Message Count in the right pane and change the value
to 0 (zero).

Unknown has given you the correct registry entry but only give you the option of resetting the count to 0 instead of stopping the behaviour all together. In order to do that you need to right click on unread mail and then click permission and in all instances set the permission to deny. This will stop the "Unread mail" warning from ever appearing on any screen again. I suggest you write this registry tweak down so that if you decide to undo it you will know the route and procedure for doing so. Good luck.

Will editing this key turn off the message count permanently or just
until the next time that I open Outlook? My goal is for the Welcome
screen to never tell me how many e-mails are unopened.

Thank you. Do I need to do this to all unread mail that I receive in the
future or will doing it once turn it off now and forever?

Brian, I use TweakUI for XP on my system to turn off the mail count on the
Welcome screen. One quick check mark in TweakUI and its done. If I decide
later that I want it back, it's simple enough to uncheck that box.

TweakUI is one of the Power toys for XP. This URL links to the version that
is *only* for XP with SP1:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

If you do not have SP1, the earlier version can be found at:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

Thank you. This answer will suffice.
