It should be mentioned, this is NOT an official Microsoft service pack, and
thus, is NOT supported by Microsoft (in other words, if you have problems
because of it, tough).

My problem with it is that you cannot install individual fixes,
tweaks, etc. It's all or nothing.

Duly noted. That said, it does sound handy, especially in the case of
doing an OS reinstall. I'm familiar with most of it's stated components,
having already implemented most of the major features. Have all the
necessary update & security patches saved to disk, but would enjoy the
convenience of being able to apply them collectively, along with the
other stuff.

Would like to hear more comments from those like Tiger who have tried it.

I've used it and quite like it. It's an easy way to update Win98se, and I've
not noticed any problems associated with it. But be sure to go to the
Windows Update site after applying it to check on what, if anything, it
fails to apply. When I originally applied version1.2, I found a couple of
patches had not been included, but I know that things have been added to 1.5
(which I've also now applied).

The above advice may not guarantee a trouble-free install, so *back up*
before installing.

My experience:

I downloaded the first issue of this software (sesp1.exe) on 2004-02-20
and installed and ran it without any problems. I liked the W2000 theme,
although as I already had all the updates plus the faster defrag etc.,
there was not a lot of extra benefit.

On the strength of that, I downloaded the latest issue (sesp12.exe) on
2004-03-10 and, as advised in the majorgeeks link, installed it over the
previous version.

Unhappily, whenever I then rebooted Windows I got the dreaded BSOD with the
message:

<quote>
Invalid VxD dynamic link call from ESDI_506(03) + 0000 17E8 to device
"0026", Service A.

Your Windows configuration is invalid. Run the Windows Setup program again
to correct this problem.

Your is the first report I've read of a bad experience with this Unofficial
service pack in any version, and therefore very interesting (and cautionary)
to me. This may explain the mention that, in the latest version, some "major
bugs" have been fixed:

What's New in 1.5?

- Adaptec ASPI 4.60 drivers.

While version 1.5 is my first trial, I do not see any reference
indicating an upgraded Defrag.
The only reference to that is in the XP SP1 ? on the
official W98 MS security update CD (Febuary 2004)

While there is limited load options, at least it does not load
unwanted extras like WMP9 etc, like the MS.CD which zips
through updates with no indication or choices.

Interesting. With previous versions of the service pack, it used to be
listed that it upgraded one's 98se defrag and scandisk to the ones that come
with WinME.

I just downloaded this from majorgeeks.com a few days ago. I didn't notice
any major differences good or bad (particularly in the Notepad application).
Now that you mentioned it, the defragger did seem faster.
