Unnecessary New Hardware Wizard

Hi,

I run WinXP/32 SP3.

The machine behaves in a weird and very annoying way. Each time I insert an
unknown (and sometimes even known!) standard USB device, like USB memory, a
digital photo camera or an MP3 player, it will start New Hardware Wizard with
several dialog boxes, giving plenty of warnings about drivers not having
Windows Logo, searching drivers on Internet (though they are built into
Windows!) etc. etc.
The whole procedure takes quite a long time.

On another computer, also running WinXP/32 SP3, it will take seconds. The
USB device is immediately recognized and seamlessly installed without any
questions.

What's the reason? How can I repair this malfunction?

Kind regards

Uwe Seiber has some helpful information on his site.

For example, see "XP asks for drivers".

Thanks a lot, Paul. Uwe Sieber's site is a gold mine of USB tips.
However I did not succeed repair the system (XP asking for built-in drivers
through its New Hardware Wizard).
I checked inf files with another Dell computer which works ok. I did not
find anything suspicious... still the problem persists.
