Unnecessary alert

I have real-time protection turned on and automatic scan turned off. Windows
Defender has an alert on its system tray icon because I haven't scanned my PC
in a few days. Surely if I have real-time protection enabled I don't need to
keep continually scanning my entire PC?
 
One other note--Microsoft has acknowledged that the current program alert is
too intrusive--you can set the program to scan only once a week, and with
that setting, you would not expect an alert until more than a week has
passed. The current program alerts more frequently than that--and that's a
bug.
