Unneccesary startup items?

Fred

Sometimes when I have to reboot, or shut down, I am told
that a program is still running, or not responding, when
no programs are open that I am aware of.

I'm running Windows XP-Pro, relatively new m/c, plenty
hard drive space and memory.

RUN-msconfig shows a huge list of startup items running.

Do I need all of these?

What are necessary AND what can be disabled from startup?

Thanks - Fred
(Please no geek-talk, I know just enough to be scary).

Fred -

The most direct answre is NO . . .

Try turning them ALL off, reboot and see what happens.
Those items are there as a result of programs that you
have installed. Disabling them all usually does a body
good - so to speak but you can slowly turn a few back on
to suit your prefrences.

Also, check out this link, it has valuable info for folks
just getting aquainted with XP (and even if you know a
lot too.)

Take a look at http://www.blackviper.com/ You'd be amazed at the
number of useless services clogging up your machine. Stuff that you'll
never need, but the M$ Gods in Redmond thrust down your throat.

I just took a look myself and see that he's doing a bit of a re-work
on the site at the moment, well worth coming back in a day or two.
