WINXP PRO KEEPS OVERWRITING MY MBR AT SHUTDOWN. I CANNOT
COLD BOOT MY COMPUTER WITHOUT GETTING
THE "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" STOP MESSAGE. I HAVE FOUND
THAT THE "UPDATE MBR" UTILITY FROM SEAGATE WILL START THE
OS AGAIN. UNFORTUNATELY, THIS MUST BE DONE BEFORE EACH
COLD BOOT. WARM BOOTS OR RESTARTS ARE NO PROBLEM.

THIS APPEARS TO BE A BUG IN THE OS. I HAVE TRIED THE 80
PIN IDE CABLE, FIXBOOT, FIXMBR, YOU NAME IT, WITHOUT ANY
SUCCESS.

WHAT'S THE SECRET HERE?

Marco,

The Stop 0x000000ED - Unmountable_Boot_Volume is typically caused by the
behaviors described in Microsoft Knowledge Base article; 315403. If I had
to guess, the reason the Seagate utility is resolving the issue each boot
is that it flushes the $bitmap hidden file. The same thing can be done by
running chkdsk /r in Recovery Console.

More Information:
The two may causes that I have seen for this issue are either a bad
connector cable for the drive or the a system that has encountered a
surprise shutdown. In the case of the surprise shutdown, the OS believes
the drive should be in one state; however since the shutdown caught the
hardware by surprise, the hard-drive didn't have time to write out the
information in its hardware cache and it is lost. On boot, the information
on the drive and the information in the $bitmap file do not match and the
kernel mode trap is thrown. As stated in the Knowledge Base article, this
can be resolved by a chkdsk /r or it also sounds like the Seagate tool may
do something similar.
