Jeff

I started getting an error sporatically when I shut down
my computer, or when i try to load new programs. I
called dell and was told to perform chkdsk /r, which I
did. The problem was still there. I was then told to
run fixboot. Same thing. What can I do to fix this
problem I am afraid of reloading windows xp in fear I may
lose some of my data. Are there any programs out there
that will fix this. Thanks

I have used the repair option of XP and not lost any data. I think its
relatively safe to do it. but its better to backup ur most sensitive data.
What kind of error messages are you getting? do u get blue screens? When you
try to shut down does the computer restart? I had the problem of windows not
starting at all so i used fixmbr. I see you have used fixboot. Maybe that
might help.

Jeff;
Power off
Desktop:...Open the case and reseat the hard drive IDE ribbon cable at
both ends.
Laptop:... simply remove and reinsert the hard drive.
If that fails:

Otherwise go to the website of the hard drive manufacturer and
download their hard drive diagnostics.

Do you have a hard drive overlay such as Max Blast?
Windows XP sometimes has issues with overlay software.
You may need to perform a Clean Installation without there overlay
software which is not needed anyway.
