I built a system, installed XP Pro, and everything was fine. then i slaved
a drive to transfer data, POST found the slave, but the blue screen of death
shows up after the splash screen saying:

UNMOUNTABLE BOOT VOLUME

with all the advice from microsoft that doesn't help.

any ideas what caused this...? when i set everything back to the original
setup, the UBV message continued to show up. only thing i could do was
reformat.

Power off
Desktop:...Open the case and reseat the hard drive IDE ribbon cable at
both ends.
Laptop:... simply remove and reinsert the hard drive.
If that fails:

Otherwise go to the website of the hard drive manufacturer and
download their hard drive diagnostics.

Do you have a hard drive overlay such as Max Blast?
Windows XP sometimes has issues with overlay software.
You may need to perform a Clean Installation without there overlay
software which is not needed anyway.
