I was in the middle of downloading & installing some critical updates & my
computer froze. I restarted & got a message - "unmountable boot volume" so I
followed the instructions on the screen & nothing happened, so I googled the
message along with some other info from the blue screen (0x000000ED etc) and
found that I have a "damaged file system." The problem is..according to the
instructions to fix this I need to start my computer with the Windows XP
CD - which I don't have. I purchased my Compaq laptop with WinXP already
loaded, so the cd didn't come with it. Help !
Thanx, Skye

Bah, i hate it when vendors dont give you the cd. I thought they were
required by law to give you a copy of whatever operating system they install
on your system. You should contact them and yell at them. Let me know if
they cooperate with you about getting your own cd. I'll try and help if
not.

Good luck,
Aaron

PS - cool name =)

The OEM agreement that vendors are bound by allow them to not only give you
a proprietary recovery CD, but to also make extensive changes to what is
installed with the operating system and how it is configured. There is no
law that requires the CD you mentioned.

Hi Skye,

Download the WinXP boot floppy set and create the necessary disks:

Home edition (4 disks):
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=33290

Professional edition (6 disks):
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=33291

Start the machine with them, and enter the Recovery Console by hitting "r"
when prompted. Hit "1" to choose the system to logon to (if you just hit
<enter>, you will cancel out). You will need the administrator password to
logon. From the command prompt, run "chkdsk C: /r" - if you are prompted to
provide the path, use C:\Windows\system32.

When it finishes, remove any boot floppies and reboot the machine, see if it
helps.

No, there is no such law. They are required by their agreement
with Microsoft to give you a means of reinstalling the system.
They can do that by giving you a regular installation CD, a
restore CD, or a hidden restore partition on the drive.

Alright - well i figured they had to give you SOMETHING. if not the actual
cd. stupid vendors.
