I replaced a 3.1 GB HD in an Emachine 566i with an ulta ata WD 120gb HD
7200rpm. Installed XP on it and it worked fine for about two weeks. Today
it gave me the BSOD and I contacted e-machines. They flat out stated that
the system can only take up to 40gb at 5400rpm. Since the system, when
purchased, had an Ultra DMA EIDE HD in there I thought Ultra ATA wouldnt be
an issue. Tried getting into safe mode and nothing.Last Known good;
nothing. After an hour of trying, I turned it back on and instead of BSOD
got a black screen saying no operating system found. BTW right before
freezing and any problems occurred, I installed a popblocker from Optimum
Online. Two days later, I was told by them it was buggy so I uninstalled.
Later that day got the BSOD. Not sure if it is related but wanted to supply
the info regardless.

Question one: Is there a limit to the size of the HD on a mobo? never heard
of it.

Question 2: If the eide controller on the mobo is not compatible with my
ultra ata hd, is it possible i may have fried it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Nice going. 3 guesses what your next system won't be.

Yes. But it isn't at 40GB.
never heard of it.

Then you better have your ears popped ;-)

No, that is not (should not be) possible.
It may not even be dead, given the detail.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Question 3: Could the popup-blocker have anything to do with it?

Although not a likely one, yes, it is a possibility.
