unmountable boot volume is kicking my butt

Ok, so a few weeks ago I got the dreaded blue "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME"
screen. I have been all over the Microsoft site and can't fix it. I don't
have the original XP CD but got one from a friend. I put it in and nothing
happens (except for that darn blue screen!) I have read the think about the
recovery counsel and the chkdsk thing but I can't get to the recovery
counsel. The article said to press "r" when you're on the "Welcome to Setup"
screen but I don't see a "Welcome to Setup" screen. Can someone PLEASE help
me? I have just spent over an hour arguing with my computer... I don't want
to go into an area that I know nothing about and start changing things. So
if you could give me an incredibly detailed outline of what to do that would
be great. Thanks.

If you aren't seeing the Setup screen, you most likely haven't gone into the
BIOS and reset the boot sequence, to boot from CD first.

To do this, power down, and restart from power off. On most systems, the
BIOS setup is only available from power-on restart, not from a warm boot.

Press the appropriate key, which will be listed on the screen. Common keys
are F2, F10, and DEL. if you miss it, power off and try again. Look
through the setup screens for the boot sequence and put the CD drive first.

Boot with the CD in the drive and watch the screen. You may or may not have
to press a key to boot from CD.

From there, you already have the directions for getting into the Recovery
Console.

Finally, if you aren't comfortable with doing this, locate someone who not
only is, but is actually familiar with what they're doing.
