UNMISTAKABLE INDICATION IM CONNECTED

Hi there,
On my computer (without doing something like opening internet connections and checking status), it is not clear, at any given moment, whether I am connected to the internet or not .
I find that I get disconnected from the internet without realising it, which can affect opening website pages and obtain downloads. Because of this, I would like an unmistakable indication which shows up whatever other applications are open; how can I obtain this?
(Windows XP with Freeserve Anytime).

open network connections, highlight your connection and right click,
click on properties in menu, then on bottom u should see a box that if u
click with check mark says show icon in notification area
 
Start - Connect To - right click your connection - Properties - Show Icon In Notification Area
