anyone managed it yet? seems only certain manufacturers models can do it and
then you need the right core too. i`m waiting for my HIS x1800gto ICEQ to
arrive and was curious as to wether i can soft mod it too. i`ll not be upset
if i can`t but its nice to know if i can. i did a quick search and most
people have modded the connect3D version to an x1800xl. anyone know any
other cards that can be modded? thanks.

all 1800 are rv530 gpu core... the only difference between the gto and
a xl is the speed of the memory the gto is 2ns and the xl is 1.4ns

This is why the xl have a speed of 1400mhz vs 1000mhz from the gto.

maybe that flashing the video bios to a regular xl unlock the 4 pipes
that are locked and that independly from the speed of the memory...
the only concern here would be to downgrade the speed of the card just
to get it stable as it is not a good overcloker. Or modding the bios
and then flashing it to the card. The sapphire x1800gto is a vivo
version so the best thing would be to get a bios with the vivo setup.

I've read that, the power color one can be modded to, and also the
x800gto2 from sapphire can be modded to a x850xt pe with a descent hs.

And some x800 256mb to a xl of xt from msi.

sorry it r520 for the kind of graphic core.

thats interesting to hear. i would hope to unlock the extra pipes AND
overclock the card too. thats an ideal situation but overclocking on its own
is enough i guess.

The advantage of unlocking the pipes is that it can be achieved without
overclocking and there fore isn't subject to the limits imposed by
cooling.

Some of us with less than great cases/PSUs are limited in OC'ing by
heat dissapation.

On some web site i've found out that the sapphire x1800xl (AIW) is the
exact match for the x1800gto (vivo). The only thing would be to make
sure that vivo and AIW are the same. And the program used to flash the
board was ATIWinflash108.zip my gues is that it was done on a
sapphire, But powercolor and HIS are known too to be flashable
capable.

a review of the card.

The extra pipe are holdding around 700points in 3dmark05...
And a few extra 5-12fps in games. also it is been said that after
unlocking the card it wasn't anymore a good overcloker.

So to me it a future mod when the card will fall on it knees on havyer
game than Oblivion at 1024x764x32...

Here's a review of the x1800gto card vs all sort of VC and the 7600gt
xxx from xfx witch is the only one that surpast the x1800gto at stock
speed and pipes. ;-p-I--< anyway the guy at the shop told me that the
xxx was a trouble maker. So i'm in for an other ati this year.

I'm getting one soon hehe.

Ps: it's a long card so people with mini case should double check
that. I'm a bit concern about my chipset fan but if the one a got fits
then the other should fit easily.

bhabye, tata... ciao.

AFAIK, VIVO and AIW are not the same. AIW's have a TV tuner built into
them. VIVO just implies (from what I've read) it's got Video In/Video Out.
So you'd need a separate TV tuner to actually see any TV channels. It would
be fine for capturing video from another source, but it's not the same as an
AIW. The VIVO may not have the same audio capabilities either, so you might
end up playing around more with your audio card connectors than with the
AIW.

If you did this, and your card's extra 4 pipelines were actually broken
rather than just disabled, would the card be bricked? Would you be
able to re-flash back to the original BIOS?

Just wondering- getting an HIS 1800GTO ICEQ3 by the end of the week,
and as always am tempted by something for nothing. I want the card to
be quiet, so o/c'ing isn't an option.

i wonderd about that too. seems most cards will either flash to a proper XL
or just remain as a GTO but with the bios telling windows its an XL card
instaed with the appropriate clock speeds (which i believe is the same
anyway) and pixel pipes of a GTO. someone on a forum i looked at said that
it caused his card to give a blank screen so he booted from a floppy and
used winflash to replace the XL bios to the original bios, he just had to
type blind to do it! :-0
