anyone else have a problem with unread messages.
I SYNC the news groups for Defender.
read then and use CNTRL Q and CNTRL A to select all and mark read.
go back and look again NO SYNC, and there are still 5-7 messages NOT read.
use ALT E and ALT + H to catch up.
sync the groups again and the unread messages are still there.

been going on for several weeks.

the account has been removed.
folders compacted.
account created fresh and subscribed to groups again.
problem still there.

they show in announcements and general.

If you are using Outlook Express, or perhaps other Microsoft-authored newsreader software, this is normal.

That fits. The NNTP spec allows the server to provide an estimate of the number of messages available, rather than a precise count. Other newsreader authors are able to deal with this situation more gracefully, but Outlook Express and relatives don't.

its only on those 2 news groups on that particular server.
it used to work that by recreating the account and doing a catch up it would go away.
oh well.
live with it I guess.

It is specific--I suspect to software used on the server end, as well. I have seen it on non-Microsoft servers, but infrequently. There is some operation that they can do on the server end which will also make the appearance go away--but, in fact, everything I've seen indicates that the problem is the way the newsreader is written.
