I own a HP Pavillion laptop. My pcmcia network card
(Linksys) was, at one time, recognized and when I booted
up I had a network connection. For some reason, after I
owned the unit for about six months, my network card is
continually coming up as unknown_manufacturer. If I reboot
the laptop from 5 to 10 times my card will eventually be
recognized and operates just fine. I have contacted HP and
Linksys with no help. I have tried about 6 other network
pcmcia cards and all go unknown_manufacturer unless I
reboot repeatedly.

Any advice?

Thank you.

Well, if you've tried 6 other network cards and they all exhibit the same
fault, then it ain't the network card, is it?

You state that you've owned the unit for "about six months". Was it new when
you got it? Is it still under warranty? Sounds to me like the problem is
with your laptop.

I am having the same EXACT problem with a Compaq Presario 900Z and
Linksys WC11 wireless pcmcia card. Mine will come up PCMCI
Unknown_Manufacturer, Generic Multifunction PC-Card, and occassionall
will actually show the Linksys default name. Other times it doesn'
even power on. It has yet to remember that I've already installed th
drivers, yet when I CAN get it to show the Linksys PCMCIA identifier
am able to install the drivers each time I intend to use it, and i
works fine. Haven't had the chance to try other cards yet.

I'm on XP by the way. Sometimes it takes me about 50 plugins of th
card to get it to work.

This is really breaking my balls
