I recently defragmented my hard drive & it was unable to defrag a system
file named only with the letter O in the C:\Windows folder....I then
searched the C:\Windows folder & found 4 system files (O, E, S, Y) with 1
letter names each with the same size 1.6GB & modified on the same date but
only 3 of the 4 created on the same date. I then searched my whole computer
for files that were modified or created that matched the date & time for
those 4 system files but nothing matched.

My question is does anybody know what those 4 system files are used for or
where they might've come from & would it be safe to delete them? (I made a
complete backup image of my C drive).

I upgraded from Windows 98SE to Windows XP Pro(FAT32) & have 2 hard drives
partitioned twice each for a total of 4 hard drives.

Thanx

Scott

Hi

System files aren't large - 1.6GB. What - if any - extension have they got? You may not be able to delete them to the Recycle Bin because of the size. Move them to a different hard drive/partition for a few days to see if you get any problems. If not, delete them.

That's the weird part there is no extension!......so I guess I will take
your advice & copy them to another partition & then delete them.

They may have an extension that you are not seeing. Open Windows
Explorer and go into the Tools | Folder Options menu. Select the View
tab. Make sure that the box for "Hide file extensions for known file
types" is not checked.
