Mr.

Hi everyone:

I have a weird problem. I am running two win2k pro with SP4 at home,
one is a disktop and the other is a laptop, with a standard linksys
hub (just a basic hub, not a Router or a hardware firewall). Recently
I have uninstalled my firewall (software firewall, one is EZ Armor
from eTrust, and the other is a Sygate Prosonal Firewall Pro 5.5. One
on each computer) and got the following
problem afterwards when I try to use ipconfig to renew my ip:

An operation was attempted on something
that is not a socket.

I then found the solution for this problem on Microsoft's support
page, which is to delete the winsock and winsock2 with regedit and
then uninstalled TCP/IP, restart my computer, and reinstall my TCP/IP,
then restart again. This is great, it fixed my problem. However, it
brings another problem for me.

Here it is:

My computers are configured in one workgroup
with some shared folders, but not shared internet.
Because my ISP gave me two automatic ip
addresses in one ADSL service.

I used to be able to go online with both my computers
turned on. Now I can only go online with one of them
at a time, and it does not matter which one. Just not
two of them at same time.

I am sure there is nothing wrong with my hub or my internet
connection. Because when I turn them on at the same time
I can still use my shared folders and do anything in my home
network. Just not able to go online. As soon as I turn one of
them off, the other one goes online without any problem or
reconfiguration or restart.

The strange thing about this is that when they are both
turned on, I can still use ipconfig to release and renew
my ip addresses and doing almost anything but go online.
When I use ping command to ping www.yahoo.com it
gave me this message:

Unknown host: www.yahoo.com

I have tried to stop and restart my DHCP client and DNS client
with services.msc, and ipconfig /flushdns command.
It sometimes works for a few seconds and then back
to where it was again.

And that is my problem. Can anyone help me and tell me what to do in
detail please? (PS, this letter contains pretty much all of what I
know about win2k networking. So, if it seem stupid to you guys, please
forgive me.)

Thanks in advance, and wish everyone have a happy new year!

Hi

I am having problems with my internet connection following
software firewall problmes and the solution you found may
be the answer I am looking for. I don't suppose you know
the article number? (if so please e-mail
(e-mail address removed))

With regard to your existing problem, are you using DHCP
or static addressing? Do you have any other protocol
loaded, in particular netbui from when you de-installed
tcp/ip (as Windows requires you to have a protocol
installed so you have to put another one in before taking
tcp out)

It may be that you have 2 ip addresses assigned to you but
for some reason if you are using dhcp only one is being
assigned to the two machines. If you have netbui or
something still installed from when you de-installed
tcp/ip, this could account for why you can still talk to
the two machines. Networking will try all the protocols
available in order to make a connection, which is why it
is recommended to only have the "one" required and remove
any surplus ones.

Hope this helps.

Derick
