Mr.

Hi everyone:

I have a weird problem. I am running two win2k pro with SP4 at home,
one is a disktop and the other is a laptop, with a standard linksys
hub. Recently I have uninstalled my firewall and got the following
problem afterwards when I try to use ipconfig to renew my ip:

An operation was attempted on something
that is not a socket.

I then found the solution for this problem on Microsoft's support
page, which is to delete the winsock and winsock2 with regedit and
then uninstalled TCP/IP, restart my computer, and reinstall my TCP/IP,
then restart again. This is great, it fixed my problem. However, it
brings another problem for me.

Here it is:

My computers are configured in one workgroup
with some shared folders, but not shared internet.
Because my ISP gave me two automatic ip
addresses in one ADSL service.

I used to be able to go online with both my computers
turned on. Now I can only go online with one of them
at a time, and it does not matter which one. Just not
two of them at same time.

I am sure there is nothing wrong with my hub or my internet
connection. Because when I turn them on at the same time
I can still use my shared folders and do anything in my home
network. Just not able to go online. As soon as I turn one of
them off, the other one goes online without any problem or
reconfiguration or restart.

The strange thing about this is that when they are both
turned on, I can still use ipconfig to release and renew
my ip addresses and doing almost anything but go online.
When I use ping command to ping www.yahoo.com it
gave me this message:

Unknown host: www.yahoo.com

I have tried to stop and restart my DHCP client and DNS client
with services.msc, and ipconfig /flushdns command.
It sometimes works for a few seconds and then back
to where it was again.

And that is my problem. Can anyone help me and tell me what to do in
detail please? (PS, this letter contains pretty much all of what I
know about win2k networking. So, if it seem stupid to you guys, please
forgive me.)

Thanks in advance, and wish everyone have a happy new year!

No, it's not stupid at all, it's rather not a DNS question.

I would rather see you post this in the:
microsoft.public.win2000.networking newsgroup sing it's related to your
issues and would get better exposure.

My feeling is once you removed your firewall/router, then you lost the
ability to share mutliple internal machines on the one connection. Your DSL
modem is only allowing (appears to be) one machine at a time (it;'s only
binding to one MAC). I would suggest to put your Linksys Firwall/Router back
up on there to shared them out.

Post anything further to the group I mentioned above for more information
about networking.

Dear Ace:

Thank you for your advance, and I will post this again in the
Networking group. However, I think I have miss let you to a wrong
decision. When I said I have uninstalled my firewall, I meant my
software firewall, which is a EZ Armor from eTrust CA, and a Sygate
Prosonal Firewall Pro 5.5 (one on each computer). Plus, my linksys hub
is the most basic one, it is just a hub with no other functions,
therefore, it is not a Router or a hardware firewall, and I have never
had any of those. So, you see, I am still running the linksys hub with
nothing to put back up on. Which means, my problem is still there.

I would greatly appreciate if you can help me with my problem again.

Thank you in advance, and happy new year. :)

Hi Mr,

I still think it's a networking issue and now possibly an operating sytem
issue due to that firewall software being removed. This is really not a DNS
issue. If you can get one to work or the other but not at the same time,
then it tells me it's NOT a DNS issue.

Do me a favor, bring them both up together at the same time. Then at each
one, do an ipconfig /all and post it back. I want to see exactly what both
machines are getting configured as.
