Unknown Error

This started about a week ago. I would come back to my computer and there
would be a window open on the desktop that tells me "There has been an
unknown error" but that's all it says. I have an option to click "OK" button
and the window closes and eveything continues.

Any Idea what this error is?

Please post a copy of the Warning / Error Report from Event Viewer.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste.
Often the link will, however, say there is no further information.

(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

Gerry,
Thanks for the response. I checked the event viewer and I am assuming this
is strange, but there is no entry on any of the logs regarding an unknown
error (or even an entry around the time the error occured).

I don't know if this would make a difference, but my quotation was
incorrect. The message in the Error Window says: "An unknown error has
occurred" . The only other thing in the window is a button with "OK" on it.
When I click on this button the window closes.

You have looked in Event Viewer for something similar to what you saw
earlier. You need to look in Event Viewer for any Warning / Error Report
in both the System and the Application logs occurring shortly before or
shortly after the Unknown Error occurred. You may still not find anything.

If you cannot see a Warning / Error Report are there any Information
Reports saying what is going on? Is this problem happening during the
boot process or long after? Does it only occur when you are using a
particular programme?

Gerry,
This is what I find this group to be most helpful. Sometimes the obvious
just doesn't appear to the person close to the situation.

Your response got me thinking. It does not happen at boot up, and it
doesn't happen with specific programs, so my initial reaction was still no
idea what is causing it. But then I thought about some of the stuff running
in the background that I do not even realize is actually running. At least
one of these programs was just "updated" about the same time as this problem
started. Do you think that might be the problem? Duh......

Anyway, I turned off basically everything I had running in the background
and so far, the error has not appeared. I will slowly bring back up those
thing I really need (pop-up stopper, ect.) and see if I can see if it starts
again.

So, Gerry, your question about a specific program may have lead to the
solution. I will let you know if anything happens. In the meantime, Thank
You very much for your help!!!
