Unknown Error

i have a JVC GR-D239E camcoder.
The problem I have is this...
I plug the camcorder in with the Firewire, and XP
recognises a 'compatible' camcorder.
It then asks me what I would like to do, and I say Video
Capture with Movie Maker.

So, Movie Maker starts and I go through the Capture
Wizard up to the point where it asks you to pick either
an Automatic Capture, (the one that rewinds the tape and
then captures the whole thing), OR, a Manual Capture,
(where you rewind the tape to a particular start point).

If I pick the Auto option, the next screen says Rewinding
Tape, and I hear it rewind, BUT, whenever it reaches the
start of the tape and stops, then before it moves on to
Capture Video, I get the following...

In a familiar Windows error box with the red circle
and "X", titled Windows Movie Maker, the message
reads, "An unknown error has occured".

OK I thought, let's try the Manual option... No luck,
I get the same error.

as suggested by others I have already tried this:
Download and re-Install DirectX runtime namely <directx_dec2005_redist.exe>
Download and install Windows Media Encoder namely <WMEncoder.exe>
Plus already have SP2

Unknown error persists plus now i get a:
Class not registered warning if the Show preview option is active.

HELP!

I installed & used DvPlayer successfully yesterday all the bottons work etc.
Unfortunately my problem is not viewing the raw video files from the camera,
I can even do that directly onto the TV.

The problem is in capturing the files for editing (not supported by
DvPlayer) wich is still failing.

With regards to the PAL question, this is what the camcoder manual states
that:
**This camcorder is designed to be used with PAL-type colour television
signals. It cannot be used for playback with a television of a different
standard. However, live recording and LCD monitor/viewfinder playback are
possible anywhere.**

I downloaded the following program from the site you recommended (after
being redirected):
windowsxp-kb893008-x86-enu
I'm not sure if its the right one & haven't installed/tried it yet (let me
know if its ok)

just installed & ran
windowsxp-kb893008-x86-enu
no change...

I noticed that at some point I also downloaded & installed windows media
encoder 9. It works but the output is very poor & choppy.

anything else i can try?

the notebook finally packed it in with all these programs being loaded onto
it.
the task menu stopped showing the active windows (only allowing me to switch
between windows using alt-tab ). also started crashing while i was working on
a word program & when trying to save!!!

final solution? i had to reinstall windows from scratch ;(

no crashing so far (1 week later). MM now works but cannot capture the
entire tape without crashing. have to manually capture parts of it...
