I have a user who, every time he uses explorer to open a
folder or file, gets a message that says "The web page
you requested in not available offline. To view this
page click connect." He's not trying to access a web
page...just a file on his computer. He has Windows XP
installed. Does anyone know why he's getting this
message?

If Internet Explorer is your default file/folder veiwer
try opening, tools > folder options click the view tab and
make sure that "automatically search for network folders
and printers" isnt ticked. If that dosn't work try
restoring defaults or you can make another browser default.
hope this helps.

Thanks..I'll try this.

This didn't do it...the "automatically search for network
folders and printers" wasn't checked.

Here is a .reg download from Kelly's Korner:
http://www.kellys-korner-
xp.com/regs_edits/nonetcrawling.reg Its a small program to
undo the "Automatically search the internet for files and
printers" entry in the registry. Here is the page link
where you can find it yourself on line 275;

Another thing I would do is have your friend download
Adaware by lavasoft and SpybotS&D. You may have a browser
hijacker or some disruptive program causing the problem.
Also do a good virus scan, some can be done on-line if you
search for "online virus scan" on google. I could be wrong
about it being related to the auto search for printers and
folders so don't be bashful about posting your question
here again.

hope this helps...
