Onstatring Vista I get a message saying that an 'unknown device' has failed
to install.

Checking Device manager also shows the Unknown Device as not operating.
Trying to fix this asks me to identify the device by kind or manufacturer.

As far as I can tell, all the devices attached to my computer are accounted
for. How can I identify what this unknown device is?

Press the WINDOWS key (the one with the flag) and the PAUSE key
simultaneously and click on Device Manager. Or get there via Control Panel.

Expand the Unknown Device tree if necessary and double-click the device in
question. Sometimes the info there has clues.

Here several such entries are related to drivers needed for sound card
features ... features that the card's drivers do not support in Vista.

Go to Details in the Device Properties and look at the Hardware Ids.
Google on the last part of the lowest string - the part after the last & -
and you should get an answer to what it is and what others have done about
it.

Thanks for that. I have extracted a bit more information now, but not emough
for me to identify the item.

It is reported as being on Intel(R) 82801 GH (ICH7DH) LPC Interface.

Checking this shows that the Intel(R) 82801 GH (ICH7DH) LPC Interface
Controller 27B0 is "working properly"

Any further ideas?
