I have an unknown device in my Device Manager (has a yellow question mark
next to it). Apparently, it's a USB device - but there are no drivers
installed. Also, I have no idea what it is. I sent a report to Microsoft
and I received a message that says the device is made by Prolific
Technology. I Googled this company - but could only find a driver (not what
the device is). I don't want to install a driver for something I know
nothing about. Can someone help? Thanks.........

It would help if you tell us what hardware you have or think you have on
your system. Prolific is probably your USB controller, which needs your MB
drivers or it could be a wireless adapter.

Prolific make a number of USB devices. I have a couple of their USB to
serial adapters, which provide serial ports to systems that don't have them
(like laptops). They work well for me.

Try right-clicking on it and uninstalling it, then use Action, scan for
hardware changes.

There is a freeware utility called UnknownDevices available from
http://freewarewiki.pbwiki.com/UnknownDevices that may be of some use

Thanks...I'll try that. The only thing is - I didn't add anything to my
system.

Perhaps someone else did, though. That's an advantage of USB ports that's
also a serious security hole.
